who killed our fellow americans to justice. >> shep: the f.b.i. now joining the hunt for the gunmen who stormed the u.s. consulate and killed the american ambassador and others. plus, he traveled to the heavens and took the dreams of an entire nation along for the ride. >> faith looked down kindly on us when she chose neil to be the first to venture to another world. >> shep: tonight remembering neil armstrong, our first man on the moon. first from fox this thursday night, the crisis in the middle east. arrests in ex with the attack on the u.s. consulate and the murder of our ambassador and others. the arrest of suspects may be a meaningful development, we'll see. it could be just a symbolic gesture by the libyans in which they round up the usual suspects and report their conducting interviews. it won't be the first time. there is no way to know whether they have a motive and what it

is. here is what we know. investigators in the united states and libya say the astack on the consulate was likely an act of terror and likely timed to mark the 9-11 terrorist attacks. the libyans say it was a two-part operation. investigators are looking into whether it was an inside job. one that included locals and a raid on a supposedly secret safehouse. the chairman of the u.s. house intelligence committee says it was a coordinated military style, commando type operation. tonight spokesmen at the white house, the pentagon, state department, all say they can not confirm the libyan report of arrests. and u.s. officials are urging everyone involved to take the arrest news with a grain of salt. a senior libyan official says four men are in custody and we're conducting ways of interrogating them because they are suspected of helping instigate the events at the u.s. consulate. u.s. intelligence officials have said there is zeroing in on a certain militant group that fits

the al-qaeda signature. the f.b.i. sent teams of personnel to libya and the boss at the justice department is headed back to washington. attorney general eric holder cutting short his overseas trip to oversee a criminal investigation into the attack. it killed ambassador chris stevens, a foreign services officer, and two former navy seals. katherine herrage begins fox coverage. there is evidence this may have been an inside job? >> two separate sources, one in intelligence source in libya. the other here in the u.s. tells fox there appears to be evidence that elements of the libyan security force were, quote, act not guilty concert with the attackers at the attack in benghazi. sean smith was so unnerved by what he saw that night, using his gaming handle, he let his anxiety spill onto the web. quote, assuming we don't die tonight, we saw one of our police that guard the compound taking pictures. the word police in quotes. tonight's setting an investigation that is barely 48 hours old.

u.s. officials not confirming or denying the reporting or saying they just haven't seen that. in a briefing, the emphasis was on the libyans who helped. >> libyan security forces lost people in the bottle at benghazi. we also had, i think we said in the background call yesterday, spontaneous volunteering by a local militia, the 17th of february brigade to come to our assistance. >> fox news is told a leading suspect affiliated with the al-qaeda group in north africa, it has tried and failed to establish an islamic state in eastern libya. >> shep: any word on possible intelligence failures on this new 9-11 attack? >> a briefing on the hill from members of the senate intelligence committee by david petraeus, c.i.a. would not comment on those discussions, but we know the house intelligence committee members will be briefed early tomorrow morning. the question is whether the u.s. was blind sided, was advance

warning missed or was it locked down in a short time. flatly rejecting the idea that the intelligence community was blind side. saying that's going to take some time. >> shep: thank you. u.s. war ship is in place off the libyan coast after this attack. pentagon officials say there is a second destroyer on the way that will be there within days. they tell us it's just a precaution. >> they're prepared to respond to any contingency. that's what the u.s. military does. but again, they have been assigned with a specific. >> shep: the pentagon sent 50 u.s. marines to libya to provide security. rage is exploding across the muslim world as fox reports tonight. rage directed squarely at americans. now we're learning about a u.s. intelligence bulletin, one that warns the violence could be red to america by extremist groups looking to recruit and exploit

anger. in other words, they could bring it over here. apparently because of this video that ridiculed islam and its prophet mohammed and put that prophet in awful situations in this video, although whether that's the real cause is open question. but today the secretary of state hillary clinton made clear her feelings on that video. >> we absolutely reject its content and message. and we have the greatest respect for people of faith. to us, to me personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible. >> shep: secretary president clinton did add there is no justification for responding to this video with violence. she made no mention of whether terrorists attacked this on another 9-11 when they killed our ambassador. this is the scene in cairo, egypt right now. demonstrators have been fighting with police for days. earlier they set off what

appeared to be fireworks there. you can see them exploding over people's heads. a festive touch in a very serious situation because protests like this one are growing by the hour all around the globe. some hot spots for you here. you can see they stretch from north africa to the middle east to asia. in iraq, crowds in baghdad and basra chanted anti-american slogans in the street. a shiite muslim group called anti-muslim video, un forgivable. others are demanding u.s. embassy in baghdad close down. that's the world's largest american diplomatic mission with some 15,000 employees. in tehran, hard liners burning the u.s. flag outside t swiss embassy. riot police sit strong outside that embassy. yemen now, an air strike killed the top al-qaeda deputy, rioters there tried to storm our embassy. they made it inside the

compound, but yemeni security forces used -- fired into the air and eventually sealed off the area. so that's the overview. our coverage continues now with a fox report with jonathan hunt. back to those concerns that the violence could spread to the united states. why are they voicing concerns that that could happen? >> there is worry that the violence we've seen in places like yemen could inspire extremist groups to take action right here at home and the f.b.i., dhs bulletin published today makes continual reference to anti-american sentiment stirred up by that anti-islamic movie that is doing the rounds on the internet right now. part of the bulletin, in fact, says, quote, the risk of violence could increase both at home and abroad as the film continues to gain attention. it goes on to say, first responders should remain aware of the potential for spontaneous

large crowds and protests that could overwhelm resources and should be vigilant for possible efforts to encourage peaceful protesters to commit acts of violence. this same bulletin also warned all faith-based organizations, be that faith jewish, islamic, christian, or anything else, to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity around the houses of worship and report it if they see it. shep. >> shep: early friday now in the middle east, the holy day, a at this when anti-american sentiment is expected to grow. >> friday, of course, is their traditional day of prayer in the muslim world. it has become over the last 18 months or so of the so-called arab spring the traditional day of protest. extremist imams, extremist mosques will no doubt be preaching anti-american sentiment, sending hundreds of thousands possibly across the middle east, maybe even more, of fired up extremists on to the

streets tomorrow. the president, though, warned today that anybody who perpetrates acts of violence against americans should be warned. here he is. >> i want people around the world to hear me to all those who would do us harm. no act of terror will go unpunished. it will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. no act of violence shakes the resolve of the united states of america. >> we also understand that president obama spoke on the phone with a yemeni president today. shep, thanked him for his security forces helping to turn back the protesters at the embassy there examine reminded him of his responsibility to secure u.s. personnel in the area. we're also hearing tonight that u.s. officials are particularly concerned about potential violence tomorrow again in yemen in sudan, in pakistan, and perhaps most of all, in egypt

>> shep: living legends of space gathered in dc today to remember one of their own. the astronaut neil armstrong, america's first man on the moon. he died last month at the age of

82, more than four decades after he made his one small step down into the lunar dust. in that moment, neil armstrong gained admission to a hall of american heros and as time passed, he became almost a mythical figure in our nation's history. but to colleagues and family, he wasn't the famous astronaut, not the former fighter pilot. he was quite simply just neil. >> he was a friend. he was a regular guy, somebody you played golf with, somebody you skied with, somebody you vacationed with. >> no one, no one but no one could have accepted the responsibility of his remarkable accomplishment with more dignity and more grace than neil armstrong. >> shep: dignity and grace and a quiet bravery that carried him through a dangerous mission to

>> shep: today's big action from the fed, the dow ended up more than 200 points, passing the 13,500 mark for the first time since the start of the resomething. almost five years. the nasdaq up 42 and a ten-year high. the s & p up 23. it came as the fed announced plans to buy up mortgage debt and a lot of it, to the tune of $40 billion a month. it's a move aimed at stimulating the economy and getting folks back to work. you can see wall street's immediate reaction.

there will be a spike here at noon. there it goes. it shows the dow the moment the news came down from the fed. officials say that bond buying will continue until the job market shows substantial improvement. today proof it has a long way to go. the labor department reports the number of unemployed applications jumped by 15,000 last week. the highest level in a couple of months. officials say hurricane isaac may be to blame. gerri willis is here. the investors clearly like it. >> investors like it. that's right. not everybody likes it. some people think it's a sugar high. we'll get a big jump and goodness knows what will happen. senator rand paul said unlimited license to print money out of thin air? this is not the path to prosperity, but the road to ruin. other people saying the effect of easing, everything they've done at the end of the day, unemployment rate is higher, home prices are lower, not everything has gone right.

>> shep: fe, quantitative easing. >> going out and buying bonds, basically. they are printing money to do it. that's right. >> shep: seems to have blunted the negative effects of these unemployment numbers at least. >> you showed emearlier. we had august numbers in which the jobs only grew by 96,000. we have a dropping of the unemployment rate. but what happened there? we know more people got out of the job market. the job market was smaller. >> shep: all right. thank you. >> a pleasure. >> shep: new york city board of health today and all its infinite wisdom officially approved a controversial proposal to limit the sale of large sugary drinks. the rule set to take effect next month. it bans restaurants, food carts, deli, movie concession, stadiums and arenas from selling sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces. mayor bloomberg said it's all about fighting a growing obesity problem here in the city. >> this is the single biggest step any city has ever taken to

ally, that the word ally is a, quote, legal term of art. >> who knew? >> shep: ed henry is at the white house. is this mixed mentales or what is it. >> a little bit because just yesterday the president did that 60 minutes interview and said that his republican rival, mitt romney, shoots first and aims later. in this case, the president suggested egypt is not an ally. you mentioned what jay carney said, to confuse matters more. it turns out if you check u.s. law dating back to the 1980s, in in fact, egypt and other nation, a handful, are labeled specifically allies, which gives them special status and that's why it made it even more confusing at the state department when the spokeswoman was pressed on it and said yes, egypt is an ally. take a listen. >> i'm going to refer you to the white house. >> you're saying the administration, still regards egypt adds a nonnato ally and still a recipient of all the privileges that that entails?

>> yes. >> yes. that sort of contradicts what the president said in that interview. the bottom line is, this shows that especially in the wake of this violence and the fall of the mubarak government, the u.s. is still sorting out exactly what this relationship is going to be like moving forward. >> shep: lot to sort through. the u.s. house of representatives approved a bill that will stop the government from shutting down. in that bill was aid to both egypt and libya. some lawmakers are pushing back on that idea. >> that's right. some senior republicans say this was written before this, so that aid is included in there. but moving forward, some republicans say that given the fact it appears egyptian security forces have not been helping to secure the u.s. embassy there in cairo, it's time to cut this money off. take a listen. >> egypt has acts disgracefully. president morsi has been an apologist for the muslim brotherhood. the one who should be

apologizing is president morsi, for the american embassy being attacked and the flag being burned. the payment should be suspended until he makes it absolutely clear he'll condemn the actions of these demonstrators and take forceful action to protect the american embassy. >> that's the republican view on the hill. but white house spokesman jay carney said the president does not believe it's a good idea to cut off aid to egypt specifically. he said in the post moo you bark era, they've got to try to help president morsi along. they're not happy with everything, but this is not the time for the u.s. to disengage from egypt. that's the white house view. >> shep: ed henry, thanks. u.s. embassies -- the house voted on that spending bill tonight. we'll go live to capitol hill and find out all the details. how do you pay for that? that's coming up inside fox report. first, embassies across north africa and the middle east are said to be bracing for major protests tomorrow. friday prayers and all. protests in the region often reach a fever pitch at the start of the weekend just after those friday prayers.

these demonstrations began tuesday over an incendiary anti-islamic video that really went viral. protesters scaled the wall of the u.s. embassy in cairo and still out front burning flags and setting off fire crackers. since then, trouble spread to at least ten other country, from libya to pakistan. team fox coverage, conner powell is live at his bureau in afghanistan. first, leeland vittert in cairo. >> 1:30 in the morning, there is still a running street battle below us, just away from the u.s. embassy by a couple of blocks. egyptian troops try to keep the protesters away, now 48 hours after breaching the walls, trying to get to the embassy. walls of tear gas are being met, rubber bullets being hailed by the egyptian security forces trying to push the people back. there is a advice advical angle

saying, we give our souls, our blood for our prophet, mohammed. and there are a lot of people giving their blood as there are hundreds of people injured here. today, shep, tomorrow, the muslim brotherhood plans a million man march for tahrir square. >> shep: leeland vittert, from egypt to afghanistan. karzai postponed a planned trip to norway following backlash over the video. conner powell, our man in kabul, afghanistan. conner? >> karzai is not the only one concerned. security preparations are being beefed up across all of afghanistan. the afghan government tried to block the web site to prevent afghans from seeing that controversial video, but as of a few minutes ago, youtube was still available here in afghanistan. there are real concerns that we will see widespread violent protests similar to what we saw this past winters after copies of the koran were burned by u.s. soldiers. that left people injured.

>> oh, sure. it was pretty aggressive for mitt romney from the very beginning of his remarks, he began talking about the situation in north africa, expressed his regret about the terrible loss of american citizens and the cost of the upheaval over there. and fairly short order began talking about the type of leadership he would offer and criticized president obama for his defense cuts. it's been a fairly standard part of mitt romney's attack on the president and today went so far as to say that under the president, the u.s. would give up for the first time in more than 70 years, its military preparedness to fight wars on two fronts. listen. >> ever since fdr we've had the capacity to be engaged in two conflicts at once. and he's saying, no we're going to cut that back to one conflict. if i'm president of the united states, we will restore our military commitment and keep america the strongest military in the world! >> romney has taken a lot of heat for his criticism of the obama administration's statement from the cairo embassy.

he was very critical of that and yesterday held a news conference to further criticize the president and there has been a lot of criticism of democrats. he stood by it. didn't back down and republicans united around him in criticizing the obama administration, ridiculing the president for raising questions about whether or not egypt is an ally. >> shep: governor romney reacting to today's news that the fed plans to spend $40 billion a month. he was clear he does not like it. >> qe 3 is not on his positive list. he said he was against the idea. he thought while there might be the possibility of some short-term bump from it, in the long run, it wouldn't have enough bang for the buck. he said it wouldn't really be worth the exercise and that this is not the way to go about righting the economy. it's been for two years on the campaign trail, he argues that his experience and economic know how is what's necessary and as president obama demonstrated that he doesn't have it. >> shep: carl cameron from

fairfax, virginia. congressman paul ryan went back to capitol hill tonight for the first time since he became governor romney's running mate. he was there to vote on the bill to keep the government running for another six months. he voted yes and the bill passed. it also includes $1.6 billion in aid to egypt. mostly for the military. as much as 20 million to help build democracy in libya. mike emmanuel on capitol hill. some lawmakers are saying they want to cut that cash off. >> that's right. after seeing the violence and when you consider this country is $16 trillion in debt, the new york democrat representative says she's willing to take a look at some of the foreign aid being spent on egypt and libya. she says some of it is important because it goes for security at the embassies. it also goes to train local security and police forces. here is louisiana republican's view. >> i'm telling you this, if we're spending all that kind of money on security and we're spending all that kind of money

a whole weekend of no school. that's despite reports of progress in the teachers strike. the teachers union president says she's optimistic the union can hammer out a deal with the city, but the classes will not start back until monday at the earliest. some 30,000 educators have been on strike all week. a big sticking point is the teachers' objection to a plan that would rate them based on their student' stancized test scores. chicago is the third largest school district. the strike left 400,000 students out of class. the family of the american ambassador killed in libya spoke out today. we also heard from the brother of a former navy seal who died in that same attack. >> he was loyal, loving, outgoing, fun. good trash talker and teller of tall tales. he cared a lot about his friends and family and he was the glue that held a lot of people together.

>> shep: attack on iran's nuclear program could start a war in the middle east. that's the warning and not an unexpected one from a new report from more than 30 national security experts. they say this week's violence in egypt and libya would pale in comparison to iran's retaliation. saying the riots and unrest following a web entry about on obscure film are probably a fraction of what could happen following a strike by the israelis or the united states on iran. this report also warns it would take a military operation bigger than the wars in iraq and

afghanistan combined to cause more than a temporary setback in iran's nuclear program. the u.s. and more than two dozen other countries happen to be kicking off war games in the persian gulf this weekend. commanders say it will be the largest naval exercise ever in the middle east. they insist they're not trying to send any message to any specific country. fox news learned the identities of the other victims from the deadly assault in benghazi. in addition to ambassador chris steves and the foreign services officer sean smith, the attack also killed two former navy seals. sources identify one of them as 41-year-old tyrone woods of san diego. the other 42-year-old glenn dor tee, also from southern california. he was working as a security officer in libya. a family friend gave fox news some of his firsthand accounts of his seal experience. he said he started training with roughly 175 other officers and that by the end, he was one of the 17 who joined the seal
